How many of you agree when I say that decoding dress codes are no less challenging than solving a puzzle? With words like “regal pastels,” “elegant chic,” or “fusion fiesta,” we are often left wondering what’s actually the message behind these clues. To those who will be preparing to attend the next wedding this season, here are a few no-brainer tips to decode any dress code that may come your way.

Choose lighter weaves and airy fabrics if the event is outdoors. Your comfort and elegance should go hand in hand when decoding any wedding dress code. While women have options like sarees and lehengas, men can opt for veshtis, kurtas or even lightly embroidered sherwanis. The trick is to pick outfits that reflect the theme, but also give you an option

With dress codes like “elegant”, “regal”, “aesthetic” in their names, it is wise to go with outfits that are soft to touch and sophisticated to look at. These could be a stunning silk saree, or a chiffon lehenga for women whereas the men can opt for a light fabric kurta that is not heavy on embroidery but exudes sophistication in every stitch. Opt for metallic accents like gold or silver for evenings and nights, and go for floral designs for the day.

When a dress code asks for a fusion, it is your time to get the best of both worlds. What this dress code demands if for you to find a pairing from two (or more!) cultures that will complement each other, and be symbolic to the couple’s fusion love story. Perhaps you can drape a Kanjeevaram or a Dharmavaram saree in Gujarati style, or pick a lehenga-choli and wear it in a South Indian half-saree style. Alternatively, you can mix traditional motifs, or make a custom design with traditional handicrafts from across India.

If the wedding calls for a regal celebration then it is your time to bring out the velvet sarees, heavy embroidered lehengas, bandhgalas, sherwanis, or veshtis with thick zari borders. While such a dress code can get easy overwhelming with a number of heavy options, it is wise to keep the outfit heavy (think layered, embroidered) and the hairdo and accessories quite simplistic. Pay careful attention to what colors the couple is wearing, and try to stay away from those colors lest you take away focus from them.

When it comes to destination weddings, you can play with the dress code a little bit. With minimum four functions set to take place, you can incorporate local styles in your outfit. Women can opt for lighter maxi dress for a beach, and cocktail dresses for a sundowner. Accessorize with a clutch, a bracelet and minimal jewelry for a look that is well put together and does not overwhelm.

When introduced to a color theme, don’t stick to the one mentioned on the invite. If the invite says “Pink Paradise,” explore the entire color spectrum of pink. Play around with the blush and royal tones that the colors have to offer.

When it comes to wedding dress code, it goes beyond just picking or assembling a wedding outfit. It is all about the love and care that goes into showing your support and blessings for the couple.
